After earning my Masters, I was hired to be a non-profit organization’s first-ever Communications Officer. The staff and board of the organization knew that they needed help with their communications, but they did not have a clear vision for what a successful communications strategy looked like. I felt confident (if not over-confident) that my education had thoroughly prepared me for the role. What I quickly realized was that my education had given me the writing skills and critical thinking skills and even some of the graphic design skills I needed, but I still found myself filling in a lot of gaps with Google. I have learned a lot about building a sustainable and effective communications strategy for a non-profit since I started that role. I designed this workbook to support a non-profit staff member or volunteer or team that might be in a similar position I was: eager to help but overwhelmed with options.
